Ticket Sales Push Powerball® Jackpot to $425 Million
Game’s Third Highest
Oklahoma City (Aug. 7, 2013) – The nationwide rush to buy tickets for tonight’s Powerball® drawing has driven the jackpot to $425 million, the game’s third highest.
“The noise of a Powerball jackpot rocketing to $425 million will grab people’s attention in every city and town across the country and bring them out to play,” said Tom Romero, chairman of the Multi-State Lottery Association’s Powerball Group and CEO of the New Mexico Lottery. “More importantly, the revenue from their ticket purchases will empower many worthy causes to accomplish even greater things on behalf of the communities they serve.”
The game’s record jackpot is $590.5 million. It was won by a player in Florida in May.
In addition to the jackpot, there are eight prize levels ranging from $4 to $2 million. For an extra $1, players can add Power Play® to their wager. Power Play is a feature that multiplies non-jackpot prizes with an automatic prize of $2 million for matching the five white balls. Players must add the Power Play option to their Powerball play slips or tell the retailer that they wish to purchase a Powerball ticket with Power Play.
Powerball is played in 45 U.S. lotteries. Powerball jackpots start at $40 million and roll until won. Jackpots are won by matching the five white ball numbers (1-59) and the red Powerball number (1-35). The overall odds of winning a Powerball prize are approximately 1 in 31.8.
