CALUMET WOMAN WINS $30K PLAYING HOT LOTTO
OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 30, 2008) – Carolyn Groves of Calumet received an unexpected surprise when she claimed her winning Hot Lotto ticket. She knew she had a winning ticket but she had no idea it was worth $30,000.
A regular Powerball player, this is only the second time Groves has played Hot Lotto. In fact, the clerk at her favorite retail location, Vicki’s C-Store at 1510 Sunset Drive in El Reno, gave her the ticket by accident but Groves chose to purchase it anyway. She received her numbers through Easy Pick.
“I called my mom to check my ticket numbers but she gave me a wrong number. I thought I had only won $50,” explained Groves. “Then when I tried to cash the ticket at the store, the clerk told me it was worth $10,000.”
Groves was told she needed to redeem the ticket at the Oklahoma Lottery claim center in Oklahoma City. She was looking forward to claiming her prize of $10,000, but when she arrived at Lottery headquarters, she learned that playing the ‘Sizzler’ option increased her winnings to $30,000.
“I was shocked,” said Groves, who isn’t upset about the mix up.
For now, she and her husband, Randy, plan to take the grandchildren camping as well as invest in their poultry business.
Net proceeds of all Lottery games are used to support improvements and enhancements for Oklahoma education. More than $220 million has been contributed to education since November 2005.
Proceeds are used statewide to supplement existing funds for a variety of important education purposes, including: teacher compensation and benefits, early childhood development programs, college scholarships, classroom technology and construction of educational facilities.
